A Malay wedding invitation (kad kahwin) is issued by the parents, invites guests to the majlis perkahwinan or walimatulurus, and gives the date, the time window and the venue of the reception, while the akad nikah is often held earlier, sometimes the day before, for close family only. On The Private Wedding App the akad nikah and the bersanding are two events on one e-invite, each with its own RSVP and headcount, and each guest group gets its own link, so only family are asked to the akad nikah while everyone is invited to the reception, read in Malay or English as each guest chooses and sent from your own WhatsApp, as part of the full planner at S$24.99/month or S$249 once, lifetime. 3-day free trial.
A Malay wedding in Singapore is usually two moments with two guest lists. The akad nikah, the solemnisation, is small and solemn, with close family, the kadi and the witnesses. The walimah that follows, with the bersanding, is open and generous: guests arrive during a time window, eat, greet the couple on the pelamin and go. The invitation has to carry both without inviting 600 people to the akad nikah. Today it mostly travels as a kad kahwin digital on WhatsApp. This guide covers the wording, the RSVP a buffet needs, and how to put both events on one e-invite.
The two events, and who comes to each
The akad nikah is the solemnisation, the religious heart of the marriage, registered through the Registry of Muslim Marriages. It is often held the day before the reception, or on the morning of the same day, at a mosque, at home or at the venue, with close family. The walimah, or walimatulurus, is the feast. In Singapore it is often held at a void deck, a community club or a hall, in an open-house flow: guests come during a window of several hours, eat from a buffet, greet the couple sitting in state on the pelamin for the bersanding, and leave (NLB BiblioAsia, roots.gov.sg).
Some families hold a reception for each side the same day or on separate days, the groom's side often called the majlis bertandang. Each is its own event with its own guests.
The multi-event RSVP makes each of these an event with its own answer, so the akad nikah count and the reception count are never mixed.
Kad kahwin wording in Malay
A classic structure to adapt, with the parts in brackets to replace: "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. Dengan segala hormatnya, kami [nama ibu bapa] menjemput Dato' / Datin / Tuan / Puan / Encik / Cik ke majlis perkahwinan puteri kami [nama pengantin perempuan] dengan pasangannya [nama pengantin lelaki]. Tarikh: [hari, tarikh]. Masa: [11.00 pagi hingga 4.00 petang]. Tempat: [dewan, kelab masyarakat atau blok]."
Close with the reply line, for example "Sila sahkan kehadiran sebelum [tarikh]", and the contact of the family member handling replies. If the akad nikah is listed on the same invitation, give it its own line with its own time and place, and make clear it is for family.
With Malay as the invitation's main or second language, the multilingual invitation shows the buttons, RSVP form and dates in Malay to guests who choose it.
The RSVP a walimah actually needs
A Malay reception is not a seated dinner for ten per table, so the questions change. You need a headcount for the caterer, ideally spread over the time window so the buffet never runs dry at 1pm, and dietary notes rather than a menu choice. You rarely need a seating plan, except for the family tables and the VIP area near the pelamin.
In The Private Wedding App, you can split the reception into sessions, for example "Sesi 1, 11 pagi hingga 1 petang" and "Sesi 2, 1 hingga 4 petang", as separate events, and guests choose the one they will come to. Each session shows its own total on the guest list. Turn the meal choice off for a buffet and keep the dietary and allergy questions on, so the caterer still knows who needs what.
For buffets, read RSVP for a buffet, allergies without a meal choice.
- Akad nikah and reception as two events, each with its own answer
- Reception split into time sessions if you want to spread arrivals
- Meal choice off, dietary and allergy questions on
- Seats per invitation, so a family of five is counted as five
- Menu renamed in Malay, for example "Aturcara" for the schedule
- Reply-by date, with optional reminder emails to guests who have not answered
Jemputan kahwin melalui WhatsApp
In Singapore, and even more in Malaysia, the kad kahwin digital travels on WhatsApp. The etiquette is personal: send it to each guest with a short greeting in your own words, rather than dropping it into a large group. Elders may still expect a phone call or a printed card from the parents.
In the guest list, each guest has a WhatsApp button that opens a chat with your greeting and that guest's link pre-typed. If the guest belongs to the family group, the link includes the akad nikah; if not, it shows only the reception. A sending mode tracks who you have reached. You send from your own WhatsApp, because WhatsApp does not let any app bulk-send from a personal number.
The WhatsApp invitation tools send each guest the right link with your own greeting, and track who you have already sent to.
Duit salam, PayNow and the gifts page
At Malay weddings guests give duit salam, cash in a sampul passed when shaking hands with the couple or the parents, and the amounts run well below Chinese hotel ang bao rates. More guests now send it by PayNow, especially those who cannot attend. A gifts page one tap from the invitation keeps it discreet: upload your PayNow QR on a gift card, and guests pay you directly from their banking app, with no fee.
The gifts page holds your PayNow QR with a short message of your own, and stays hidden until you switch it on.
Your next step
Create the invitation on the free trial, set Malay as the main language and English as the second (or the reverse), add the akad nikah and the reception as two events, and create a "Keluarga" group that sees both. Send yourself both links on WhatsApp and check what each guest sees. Start the free trial, then S$24.99 a month or S$249 once for lifetime access.

Try the full planner →What should a Malay wedding invitation include?
The hosts (usually the parents), the couple's names, the event (majlis perkahwinan or walimatulurus), the date, the time window, the venue and a reply-by date. If the akad nikah is on the same invitation, give it its own line and make clear it is for family.
What is the difference between akad nikah and bersanding?
The akad nikah is the solemnisation, the religious marriage, attended by close family. The bersanding is the couple sitting in state on the pelamin during the reception, the walimah, where guests come to greet them.
Can one e-invite have the akad nikah for family and the reception for everyone?
Yes. On The Private Wedding App the akad nikah and the reception are two events with their own RSVP, and each guest group has its own link: family see both, other guests see only the reception. It is part of the full planner at S$24.99/month or S$249 once, lifetime. 3-day free trial.
How do I send a kad kahwin digital on WhatsApp?
Send the link personally to each guest with a short greeting. The Private Wedding App's WhatsApp button opens a chat with your greeting and that guest's link pre-typed, and tracks who you have sent to; you send from your own WhatsApp.
Do Malay weddings need an RSVP?
For the caterer, yes: a headcount, ideally per time slot, and dietary needs. Open-house receptions are flexible, but a buffet ordered for 500 that feeds 700 is the one problem nobody forgets.
How much duit salam do guests give at a Malay wedding in Singapore?
Generally less than Chinese hotel ang bao, since the reception is a buffet rather than a priced seat; give more if you are close to the family or the reception is in a hotel. See the wedding ang bao rates guide for the Chinese banquet comparison.
Can guests give duit salam by PayNow?
Yes. Upload your PayNow QR on a gift card on the invitation's gifts page; guests pay you directly from their bank app, and The Private Wedding App takes no fee on it.
Is a kad kahwin digital acceptable for elders?
Mostly, when it is sent personally and is easy to read in Malay. Many families still have the parents call or visit close elders, and a printed QR card can open the same invitation.
